Good Diet For Gastritis

Gastritis is a common ailment of the digestive system which affects many people. It is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Gastritis is caused by an infection of bacteria called H. Pylori. This is aggravated by certain foods and drinks. Alcohol, prolonged use of NSAIDs, smoking is other common causes. Gastritis can be extremely painful. However, with a few changes in diet and food habits, it is possible to control the severity of gastritis.

The characteristics of a good diet for gastritis

Here are some modifications that should be done to your diet in order to reduce the severity of gastritis:

  • Fresh fruits and veggies, leafy vegetables, wheat bran, whole grains, bananas etc are helpful in controlling constipation. These fruits and vegetables are rich in anti oxidants and flavonoids. Other foods in this category are celery, apples, cherry, squash, green peppers, cranberries, blueberries etc.
  • Certain foods are known for causing gas. Broccoli, cabbage, beans and pepper are well known foods which irritate the stomach and cause gas. If you have to include these items occasionally in your menu, you can prepare them in particular ways to reduce their abilities to create gas. For example, instead of eating raw, soak legumes overnight or boil them lightly. You will find the gas problem to be much reduced in severity.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and veggies which are rich in vitamins A, B complex, C and E so that the stomach walls can be healed.
  • Protein is necessary to repair the damaged tissues of the stomach lining. But this protein should not be deep fried or accompanied by lots of fats. So, opt for lean meat, fish and poultry without the skin. Legumes, nuts and beans are other rich sources of protein.
  • Avoid fatty foods like processed foods. These include cookies, pastries, donuts, cakes.
  • Fatty meats like pork sausages and ground beef should be kept to a minimum. When you buy ground beef packages, check the ratio of meat to fat and buy the one with low fat.
  • Foods which are very spicy or highly seasoned can irritate the stomach lining and cause your gastritis to flare up. Common spices which aggravate gastritis include nutmeg, cloves, pepper and chili powder.
  • Reduce the intake of milk and other dairy products. They stimulate acid production in the stomach and cause pain.
  • Alcohol, caffeine, tea, chocolates and colas should be eliminated in a good diet for gastritis.
  • Citrus fruits and their juices, tomatoes and peppermint also irritate stomach and intensify gastric pain.
  • In addition to these dietary guidelines, you can add probiotic supplement in your diet. Supplements rich in lactobacillus acidophilus help to control the H. Pylori infection.

Modify your diet pattern to control gastritis

In addition to what you eat, when and how you eat it also affect your gastritis. You should never overload your stomach as this increases gastric pain. Instead, you should have light meals followed by snacks at short intervals. Always chew your food well and eat slowly. This gives time to your stomach acids to act. The process of digestion is thus facilitated.
